One of the most wonderful things about the holidays is enjoying special family traditions and treasures; some of which only come out once a year. Each year, when I open the lid to certain holiday storage boxes, I feel a flood of warm memories. Childhood ornaments, both mine and our kids’. Christmas crafts made with big hearts and creative minds. Decorative bowls or plates that have served more holiday meals than I can count. And these little treasures . . .
This band of tiny angels and snuggled up musicians have been part of my Christmas for as long as I can remember. I have a couple different sets; two angels from my grandma’s childhood and a handful of soldiers from the 1980s but this little band is all from the 1960s and is the set I remember the most fondly. They get moved around Christmas after Christmas but they are always, even if we are in the midst of moving boxes, on display.
For many years I’ve wanted to create a permanent little home for this particular set of miniatures. Last year I found this great glass house on clearance at Target. I believe it’s supposed to be a terrarium but in my mind, it’s the perfect snowy village for my miniatures.
All I need is a little lighted church, some trees and, of course . . . snow.
I used some Styrofoam left over from a package to create a 1″ thick base to sink the trees into. My smallest sized circular cookie cutter just happened to cut the perfect sized circle. (Love it when stuff works out.)
Now, time to let it snow! A combination of aerosol tacky spray adhesive and artificial snow makes the PERFECT winter wonderland effect. Here are the products I recommend for this project . . . but first, a word about Affiliate Links (required).
A couple hints when adhering snow to your styrofoam. Use a box with tall sides to keep the mess (and tackiness) contained. Make sure to adhere snow to the sides of the Styrofoam too so it looks like true snow pack no matter which angle the glass house is turned. Finally, lightly spray the trees with adhesive and sprinkle the artificial snow from above; that way it adheres to the tree in a realistic fashion.
Yes, I could just place the Styrofoam in the terrarium and pour some of the artificial snow on top but I wanted this to be more permanent and less messy.
Finally, for the final touch. I found a perfect little church ornament at Hobby Lobby and it even lights up! This is the exact winter village I imagined. Now to add my little musicians.
