It’s Doggone HOT!

I know it’s hard to believe if you live somewhere chilly but I do believe it is summer here in Arizona! The flip flops are on and the air con is running so I guess the 5 minute winter we had is officially over. It’s DOGgone hot…and that means it is time for my annual public service reminder about the impact of heat on your four-legged family members.

Each year in Arizona the local news delivers heartbreaking stories of dogs that have died from heat exposure in cars and on hiking trails. It truly is tragic because dogs will happily go anywhere just to hang out with their owners. They depend on their owners to use good judgement on when it’s just best for them to stay home.

It’s not only potential heat stroke that is a summer danger for our canine companions. Dogs can suffer from painful burns and blisters on their paw pads from walking or standing on hot concrete, asphalt, gravel and metal. Studies have shown that concrete, asphalt and gravel all retain similar amounts of heat and metal, like a truck bed, is even hotter.

I know it’s fun to bring your pup with you when you go places and do things but since dogs can’t read my blog it’s up to you to share this info with your dog-owning friends and family; or heck, even a perfect stranger if you think it will help.

At the end of this post there is a link to a full-page, printable version of the “It’s Doggone Hot” Infograph. This makes it super easy for you to share this life saving information. Feel free to pin on Pinterest or share on social media as well. Let’s get the word out.

Hotdogs are good, Hot Dogs are not. Informed dog-owners equal happy and healthy dogs.

Thank you for reminding people of this. It is a horrible death for the animal–human, dog…or anything. What are people thinking?!? Your dog does not want to sit in your car while you are in a cool building taking your time. Wake up people!!! Would you sit in a car with the windows up for an extended period of time? Oh, and while wearing a fur coat?

I can tell you are very passionate about protecting animals Vikki. Feel free to print out the PDF version of the infograph. Honestly, I keep a few in my car during the summer months and offer them to people I see who don’t seem to understand the danger they are putting their pets in. I’m afraid some people get defensive so having the infograph gets the info to them without having to engage in a long conversation. I usually just hand them the paper and say, “You know it’s really hot for your pet. Here’s some information about heat stroke prevention.” That is unless I see a dog in distress locked up in a hot car and then I’m just going to go all Bruce Lee – that’s never happened thankfully. Arizona actually has several laws to protect animals in the heat so they are really trying to get the word out there and enforce it.
