So, I’m not exactly new to video making. To date, I have 28 videos on Youtube – Twenty nine if you count THIS ONE about the time I rescued a squirrel from drowning in my swimming pool. But this is the ULTIMATE rock painting video and I really tried to up the anti here.
Video making is hard – so hard! I have an abundance of appreciation for anyone who has made a best effort to make one. You see, I always wanted to be a journalist. I pursued a degree in American Studies with a minor in English and what else do you do with that – other than become a journalist? But I didn’t. I raised two amazing, gorgeous, wonderful human beings instead . . . and supported my husband’s career. Secretly, I dreamed of being Tom Brocaw’s researcher, speaking three languages (fluently of course) and knowing how all the U.S. ambassadors take their coffee. Hey, we all have to dream.
More recently (and probably not so discretely) I become fascinated with the auditory editing style of Jad Abumrod and his compadres at Radio Lab. So – so – so good!
But today, I’m a crafter and novice blogger and this video is about painting Kindness Rocks; not monumental, not breaking news. . . but still important. I knew, unlike my previous three minute videos, I wanted to produce a more in-depth tutorial with a script, music and credits that fly by at the end. So I took a look into the gigantic canyon representing the video production learning curve and said, ” Yeah, I can jump that.”
So . . . to give you some idea of how this turned out – I bring you this . . . my Ultimate Rock Painting Video Bloopers. I think it’s popcorn time!
See – this is what happens when you talk to yourself for two weeks straight! The bloopers video comes from a day a filming “kindness rock hiding” with my daughter. All but two videos were shot in reverse; meaning I had the ON/OFF switches mixed up. When I thought the camera was on – it wasn’t and these of course were all the PERFECT shots. When I thought the camera was off, it was filming the sky, my armpit, shoes . . . the ground. You know. The good stuff! The audio outtakes come from over 80 hours of recording tongue-tied voice overs, editing, unplanned interruptions and general amateur craziness.
So you’re all at the edge of your seats, right? I know you’re just waiting for an afternoon of binge watch rock painting videos so, without further ado, I give you my first amateur(less) video. I hope you enjoy it (tolerate it) and find it informative (mildly entertaining). Feedback is always welcome in the comments section below. No. Really! Silence is the worst!

I think your video was very professional and well-done. I enjoyed the step-by-step instructions that made it all very clear. This craft is very therapeutic. (And, turns out, you’re the Squirrel Whisperer too!) Good job!

Thank you Vikki! Who knew Squirrel Life Guard would be on my resume. It’s true, rock painting (and Oui jars) are very soothing crafts.
