First, I must say I’ve had a great time reading the surveys that have come in. Many of you have taken the time to add additional comments and suggestions which I so appreciate. In fact, this posts gorgeous Cinco de Mayo tissue paper flowers was one such request. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey, PLEASE do. It seriously takes five minutes and you don’t have to be a subscriber to put in your two cents. The month of May marks TWO YEARS for A Crafty Composition and these surveys are a great roadmap for me to follow in Year THREE!
Cinco de Mayo is actually a celebration of the Mexican Army’s difficult victory over the French Empire on May 5th, 1862 but in America, it’s taken on a different role. Cinco de Mayo in the U.S. is a time to celebrate the vibrant Mexican-American culture. It’s a time for the four Fs – Food, Family, Friends and Fun; among a backdrop of vivid colors and folk-flavored music. Just take a quick browse through Pinterest’s plethora of Cinco de Mayo Pins and I dare you to not put a flower in your hair and pour yourself a salt-rimmed Margarita. Here’s some celebration inspiration.
When decorating for Cinco de Mayo, color is the key – and lots of it. Fiery reds, oranges, and magentas pop next to crisp, clear greens and bright true blues. Just pull your color scheme straight off a serape and you can’t go wrong.
Take advantage of inexpensive decorating basics like crepe paper streamers, colorful tissue paper and balloons to create easy and fun décor.
Flowers!!! You absolutely have to have flowers – whether its fresh ones in cleaned out cans of tomato sauce or big crepe paper ones decorating tables or hanging on tree branches.
The flavors during Cinco de Mayo are just as vibrant as the colors. Set up a taco bar with grilled fish and carnitas or barbacoa. Don’t forget all the fixings: salsa, crema mexican, chopped cilantro, onions, radishes and cabbage.
I love the idea of this single serving 7-layer dip. Replace the chip with one or two taquitos for the mingling diners with a bigger appetite.
Or how about dividing up these delicious ears of Elote or street corn and serving them on a skewer.
Of course you can’t forget the sweet tooth. Try cups of chopped pineapple and melon fruit sprinkled with Tajin spice or go for the gusto with these churro cupcakes from the Domestic Rebel!
Of course it wouldn’t be a Cinco de Mayo party without a variety of beverages for those parched by all the dancing. For a tasty non-alcoholic choice – try serving a variety of fresh and fruity Aqua Fresca’s.
If your looking for some great adult beverages – maybe something different than the tradition margaritas, look no further than this fantastic chart of Cinco de Mayo inspired cocktails.

Your flowers are beautiful–love the colors! And I love what you did with the beer bottles. I remember making tons of tissue paper flowers to decorate floats when I was in college. Que bonita!!!
