Living in Portland, Oregon for 5 years taught me a little bit about rain and I truly believe desert rain is unique…special; different than rain anywhere else. In other places a rainy day will get mixed reviews from it’s citizens. Some people will cozy up in their homes with a good book and subliminally listen to the drops tapping their windows. My Mom LOVES the rain and thinks of a cloudy day as a soft comforting blanket hugging her. While some people are enjoying a precipitation-induced heaven, others (like me) feel tired, cold and a little blue on rainy days…everywhere except in the desert.
I truthfully believe there is not a single desert-living creature who does not welcome the rain. I think because it is rare; both in the sense of frequency and marvelousness. Sometimes desert rain is fierce and loud with boisterous thunder quarreling with the sky. Other times, it is courteous; gently washing the dust from leaves and rocks while giving everything a much needed drink of water.
Either way, a rainy day in the desert is magical with an aftermath equally as special. When the rain stops a deliciously sweet smell of wet creosote covered dirt fills the air. Birds chipper and chat with each other while bathing in newly formed puddles. All the hidden creatures scurry out to quench their thirst on the delicious drops of rain.
I always think of a rainy day in the desert as a great gift. The desert is harsh and dry; tough because it is constantly under extremes. And then it rains. Everything stops and there is no sound but the echo of nature celebrating the freshly cleaned, replenished and revived world.
Yes, I truly love a rainy day in the desert.

I was just out “playing” in the Oregon rain and came in and read about your rain. I always loved the smell of the desert chaparral after the desert rains. Glad to hear the desert is getting a drink–bet the quail are loving it.
