DIY Hair Clips

Whimsical, beautiful, nostalgic or edgy . . . show your personality with these super simple DIY hair clips.

I have a thing for buttons; every shape, size, color and theme. Buttons are like mini treasures and running my fingers through a jarful of them just makes me happy. STRANGE? Maybe not. I’m sure there are a few other button admirers out there. At some point this obsession does become a bit ridiculous though because I actually have trouble putting these little gems to use. I tell myself I’m saving them for something ‘special’. Well, this week I decided to bring some of my favorite buttons out of storage and into circulation via super easy DIY hair clips. The supply list is short and within an hour you’ll have tons of unique hair pins. The most difficult thing is deciding which ones to gift and which ones to keep for yourself.

The Supply List

Making hair clips out of buttons is fun, easy and requires very few supplies. Of course, you need a variety of buttons – brads and beads are great options as well. You also need to chose some blank hair clips. I used a combination of bobby pins and different sized alligator clips (for different hair lengths/thickness).

While you probably already have the buttons, you may need to purchase the hair clips. Here are a few excellent options found on AMAZON. . . but first, a little message about affiliate links:

In addition to the hair clips, you need a pair of wire cutters and a strong clear glue like E6000. I like the tube that comes with precision tips for jewelry and small items.

That’s all you need for basic supplies. There are a few other supplies you may need if taking some extra steps like changing the color of hair clips or filing down metal nubs from clipped charm rings, brad prongs or button loops.

You can change the color of your hair clips with a Sharpie, Staz On Ink or even nail polish. A metal file or a small Dremel easily takes care of small nubs, prongs or loops.

The Finished Product

These hair clips were so fun to make. I put on some music and glued away; before I knew it I had two dozen! I think they make perfect stocking stuffers, secret santa or Hanukah gifts. Customized to suit each personality, they make a unique and whimsical addition to any girls wardrobe. In addition to the buttons which I already owned, I found some great shapes in the jewelry and scrapbooking aisles of my local big box craft stores. Have fun with it and think outside the box! Holiday themed, colors to match specific outfits, beads or stones that match rings and bracelets. The possibilities are endless!

Here are some of my finished hair clips. Feel free to use the new PIN IT button that pops up (hopefully) when you hover over the picture.

DIY Bobby Pins made from Scrapbooking Brads
I found these adorable ‘buttons’ in the scrapbook section of Hobby Lobby. They are actually brads.

I hope you all enjoy a wonderful weekend; either shopping the Post-Thanksgiving deals, decorating your home for the holidays, or just resting up.  I think next week I’m going to dust off the sewing machine and do a little stitching. Hmmmm maybe some jammie pants. I purchased some fun cactus fabric and I’ve heard the jammie bottoms are quick and easy to make. I hope you join me next week and as always,

Sharing is caring!

I love all the “hair toys” you made. Now if I just had longer hair……..

Thanks Vikki – they really are like hair toys aren’t they. Some of the clips are quite small. . . even for short hair (wink wink)
